Following a strong earthquake on Thursday, eight Latin American countries - Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, and Ecuador - have declared a tsunami alert.

The president of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, has indicated that the strong earthquake has been "of greater magnitude in the last 100 years". In addition, the Latin American country has deployed federal forces, including the Army, Navy and Federal Police, which seek to "review the effects" that could have caused the natural phenomenon.

On Thursday, a   magnitude-8.2 earthquake hit the southern coast of Mexico.  A tsunami alert was issued for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, and Ecuador.

The epicenter of the quake has been located at a depth of 33 kilometers and 119 kilometers from the city of Tres Picos, in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

At least 15 people have lost their lives after the earthquake: two in Tabasco, three in Chiapas and 10 in Oaxaca.

Declared a state of emergency in the Mexican state of Chiapas

The state has issued the emergency declaration after the quake of magnitude 8.2 that shook Mexico early on Thursday.

After the strong earthquake of magnitude 8.2 that shook Mexico on Thursday,  the Declaration of Extraordinary Emergency has been issued in the 122 municipalities of the state of Chiapas, local media reports.

The earthquake and its aftershocks caused heavy damage in the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, near the epicenter.
